Judy Allen Young

JYOUNGJudy Allen Young’s father was a skeet shooter, and Judy grew up with skeet. While she was still a teenager and known as Judy Allen, she won, in 1956, her first national championships ‑ ‑ the 28 gauge contest in the women’s division, and the 12 gauge team competition. In the small gauge contest, she and Carol Mandel tied with 97 birds each, but Judy won the two‑round shoot off 48 to 47. That same year, she and Jack Horner became the first mixed championship team in the 12 gauge competition. She finished the year by being named to the first of five All‑America teams.

In 1957 Judy won the 28 gauge women’s championship at the world shoot with 95 and led the year’s high averages for women in three divisions. Her big year, however, was 1958. She won the ladies’ 12 gauge world championship without a shoot off and swept all five high average leaderships for women ‑ ‑ her 12 gauge average was .978 for 1800 targets. She also led the Class AA in the California State Shoot; and, at the Fresno Open, she took the all‑around championship.
