PETER W. CANDY

PCANDYPeter W. Candy was born May 5, 1936, in Los Angeles. He started shooting registered skeet in 1958 when he quickly gained a reputation as one of the best skeet shooters in the country. In the 1960 World Championships, he collected the All‑Gauge Championship (250×250) and the 12 Gauge Championship. That same year, he and Bill Sesnon set a 12 gauge two‑man world record of 500×500.

In 1961, the young banker was chosen as a member of the All America Open First Team, an honor that was repeated two more times. Candy was the star of the 1961 World Championships when he won the All‑Around crown with 546×550 and was the 1961 High Average Leader after breaking an outstanding total of 2035×2050 12 gauge targets for a .992 average. In the other guns he broke a .947 average on 650 in the .410, a .974 on 750 in the 28 gauge, and a .978 on 1200 in the 20 gauge. He toppled the world record for a 12 gauge long run with 1357 straight at the end of 1961. In 1962 Candy entered just one shoot, the Sesnon Invitational, where he stretched his 12 gauge run to 1457 and set a world mark when he went straight on all 300 targets in the four‑gun competition. This longest streak in skeet history ended in 1963 at the Belmont Open with a station 4 low house target marking his final total of 1589 ‑ ‑ a record which held until 1976. He was the 1963 12 and 28 gauge High‑Average Leader with .995 on 1000 targets of 12 gauge, and he set a 28 gauge record breaking 644×650 for a remarkable .9907 average.
